Northwest Airlines is a major United States airline and a subsidiary of Delta Airlines . It has its headquarters in Eagan Minnesota, near St. Paul International Airport.
With 3 major hubs in the United States, Northwest, also has a hub at Narita International Airport in Asia. This airline has partnered with KLM and as a result operates transatlantic flights from Amsterdam.
In 2006, Northwest was recognized as the world’s 6th largest airline when it comes to miles flown by domestic and international passengers. Northwest Airline carries as many as 5.1 million passengers across the Atlantic Ocean yearly. It is the only US airline that carries both cargo and passengers in the same aircraft.
April last year 2008, Northwest decided to take steps and merge with Delta Airlines . The deal to merge the two airlines was closed in closed on October 2008 and this made Delta Airlines the largest in the whole world.
Despite the merge, Northwest Airlines was still operating as an independent carrier until the certificates were issued. In February 2009, both Delta and Northwest Airlines consolidated gates and ticket counters at all areas where these airlines operate.
From this year 2009 until 2010, rebranding of Northwest Airlines will take place and we expect Northwest logo to be replaced by the Delta logo. The Northwest Airport hubs were also rebranded on March 2009.
As we visit the history of Northwest Airlines, you will realize it was first named Northwest Airways. Its name was derived from the northern territory of Midwestern United States. The airline was created for the sole purpose of transporting postal mail for the US Post Office department. In 1928, Northwest Airlines started to fly international passengers to Winnipeg, Canada.
Due to an airmail scandal in 1934, the airline’s name was changed to Northwest Airlines. The Northwest Airline fleet has an average age of 18 years as of last year 2007. It has 315 aircrafts majority of them being the Boeing and Airbus.
Northwest has 3 classes which are Business, Domestic First Class and Economy. On Business Class, you will enjoy the seats that have 60” of pitch, and 176 degrees of recline ability. You will be offered free meals and refreshments, AVOD, universal power ports, a folding work table, moveable reading light and cocktail table.
Domestic Class offers meals and wide seats for comfort. However, the features are not as many as Business Class. Economy on the other hand has AVOD, free meals and power ports.
