The Assam Railway and Trading Company began construction of a 65-kilometer meter gauge line from Dibrugargh to Makum Collieries in Margherita for the sole purpose of tea and coal, making it the first railway to enter Assam.
1881 also became a landmark year for railways in the region because the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway with the legendary Toy Train was commissioned.
During the partition of India however, the Bengal and Assam Railway was re-divided based on the political boundaries.
This resulted to the formation of the Assam Railway in 1947 with a headquarters in Pandu. An Assam rail link between Kishangani and Fakiragram was constructed to establish an all India rail route and was completed in 1949.
The following year saw the first passenger train operation in the region. In 1952, the Assam Railways was compounded with the Northeastern Railway, with a headquarters in Gorakhpur. It later became the Northeast Frontier Railway, which is now one of the sixteen Zonal Railways.
