Sibsagar can be found in the Eastern part of Guwahati. It is the headquarters of the Sibasagar district. The town is located on the Dikhu River, somewhere around the left bank of the Brahmaputra River.
It was the capital of the Ahoms who ruled in Assam for 600 years. The town first fell into the hands of the Burmese before the coming of the British.
The modern Sibsagar district is now a fast developing town in Assam. Like the other towns and cities in Assam, it also excels in the tea and oil industry. The eastern regional Headquarters of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission is situated at Nazira, about 18 km from Sibsagar. The town is the center of tea cultivation in the Brahmaputra Valley, which was introduced by the Assam Company in 1852.
It has a large number of well-managed tea gardens which generates income in the province. Several timber mills can also be found in Sibsagar. Sibsagar is the most important historical place of Assam. The Ahoms ruled over 600 years and left many archaeological remains, palaces and temples. Sivasagar is well connected through air, rail and road.
The historical monuments and remains that Sivasagar offers are Ranghar, a two storied building which was built during the reign of Swargadeo Prmafta Singha in 1746 and the building was used as the royal sports-pavilion of Ahom kings.
The Kareng Ghar and Talatal Ghar are located at the south of Sivasagar town. Kareng Ghar is the seven storied building and Talatal Ghar is a beautiful structure made of bricks. The Kareng Ghar was used to be the capital and military station of the Ahom kings. Among the most remarkable monuments Gargaon Palace is also one of them.
