Bihar is considered the cradle of civilization and Buddhism in India. Buddha is believed to have experienced his Great Enlightenment in the town of Bodh Gaya around 528 B.C, and to have begun his preaching there.
Most of the Bihar was occupied by the ancient kingdom of Magadha, which existed around 600 B.C.
The district then formed part of the Maurya Empire and of the Gupta Empire.
It was seized by the Muslims in the 12th century A.D and was held by them until 1497. After this time, it was annexed by the kings of Delhi. The district went into a lot of geographical and political changes.
When the British acquired the place, it was merged with Bengal. Bihar was proclaimed a state only when India gained independence from Britain in 1947. Some of these changes resulted to the loss of some of its area, natural bounty and mineral wealth.
