Tamilnadu has some very wonderful forts from the recent history. Approx all forts were established in the 17th and 18th century.
The British established their first major fort in Tamil Nadu and most of the forts in state are established by them.
Every year large number of tourists visited these majestic forts and some of the forts are major tourist destinations of Tamil Nadu. Some popular forts of Tamil Nadu are:
Fort St George:
it is the first fort established by British in India during 1639. The fort has eye-witnessed some famous battles in the 18th century. Presently fort serves as the administrative office of the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu.
Some major attractions of the fort are museum, St Mary’s Church, the Wellesley house, and the canons of Tipu Sultan (a great Indian ruler in 18th century).
Fort St David:
The historical fort was brought by East India Company from the Marathas in 1785. Later in 1756 fort became the British Headquarter in South India. The Fort is situated near Cuddalore, about 100 miles from the Chennai.
Gingee Fort:
The historical fort was built in the 9th century by Cholas. Later the fort captured by numerous powers like in 13th century Vijaynagar Empire ruled in the fort, Gingee Nayakas made the fort its headquarter, and during reign of Shivaji it was the stronghold of Marathas in South India.
Finally in 1761 fort came under the control of British and never witnessed war again. Presently, the fort serves as a museum here visitors can get a chance to see many historical buildings like prison cell, the Kalyan Mahal, the granaries, and Chenjiamman Temple. The fort is situated at the height of 800 feet and surrounded by 80 feet wide moat. |
