Forts in Maharashtra

Maharashtra state of India is one of the best tourist destinations of the country. Maharashtra is among the leading states of India in terms of industrialization and infrastructural development.

Mumbai, the state capital is considered as commercial capital of India. In 17th and 18th centuries Maharashtra rose to prominence under the Maratha rulers like Chartapati Shivaji and Peshwas.

The ruler legacy of the state can be witnessed at the numerous forts and palaces of Maharashtra.

These forts and palaces are one of the few reasons those make a state popular tourist destination of India. The important forts and palaces of Maharashtra are:

Daulatabad Fort:
it is a popular fort city of Maharashtra and originally known as Deogiri. Initially the city was ruled by the Yadava rulers but later Muslim ruler Muhammad bin Tughlug captured the city and for some time made it the capital of his kingdom. The ruin structure of fort is still stand in impassive position.The strong outer walls, ramparts, fortification, and canons are still standing among the ruins of the fort.

The fort is surrounded by the lush greenery make the site a beautiful tourist place in Maharashtra. Some major monuments of the fort are Chini Mahal, Chand Minar, and a 210 feet high tower.

Sinhagad Fort:
the fort is an eyewitness of many bloody battles between Marathas and Mughuls. The fort got its name by the shivaji and dedicated to the Tanaji (Shivaji’s brave commander).

Visitors can enjoy the memorials of Tanaji and Raajaram (Shivaji’s son) as main attractions. The fort is very close to the Pune and easily accessible from the Kalyan Village.

Vijaydurg and Sindhudurg:
these tow fort were used as the naval base during Shivaji regin in Maharashtra. The forts are wonderful example of that time engineering.

The fort is built by transporting large amount of lead, stone, and iron over water. There are various impressive buildings and temples are located inside the fort, those make the fort a hot tourist destination of Maharashtra.

Bassein Fort:
the Bassine Fort was built by the Portuguese during their presence in the west coast around Mumbai. The fort was built in European style and the ruins of the fort explain the European conquest in that time. The fort is very close to the Vasai, a suburb near Mumbai.

Apart from these forts Maharashtra has some other prominent forts and these are Murud Janjira Fort, Purandhar Fort, Ahmednagar Fort, Ratnagarh Fort, Jaigad Fort, and Raigad Fort.
