Gandhinagar, India's second planned city is situated 460 kilometers or 285 miles north of Mumbai.
Evidently, the city was named after the Father of the Nation, the Indian thinker, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or better known as Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in the state in 1869.
The city was designed by Le Corbusier, Charles Edouard Jeanneret's professional name and a Swiss-French architect.
Gandhinagar has a central complex of government offices surrounded by 30 residential divisions, each with its own community facilities. These are all set in parks beside the Sabarmati River. The river also is a memorable place since Gandhi passed by here during his famous procession along with hundreds of Hindus.
The city's construction started in 1965 and this made Gandhinagar took over Ahmedabad as capital of Gujarat in 1970. Found here is the Akshardam, the Hindu Swaminarayan sect that is based in the city. The complex was constructed with 6,000 tons of pink sandstone brought from Rajasthan.
