Situated on the western coast of the Indian Peninsula, Gujarat is bound by the Arabian Sea on the west, Madhya Pradesh in the southeast, Pakistan and Rajasthan in the north and northeast and Maharashtra in the south.
The stat's capital, Gandhinagar, is a planned. The stat's name is said to have been derived from the land of Gujjars, Gujjar Rashtra. The Gujjars are tribal people that came to India with the Huns, wandered through Punjab and Rajasthan before settling in the west of India.

The people's architectural and artistic ability is mirrored in the many modern and ancient buildings in the state. Gujarat also boasts of wildlife sanctuaries, religious and pilgrim centers, hill resorts and other natural sights. Covering an area of 196,024 square kilometers or 75,685 square miles, the state has a single-chamber legislative assembly with 182 members and the local government is based on 19 administrative districts. It has a common border with Pakistan at the north-western fringe. |
