The importance of Porbander goes beyond its being the birthplace of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
It is also an intermediate seaport on Saurashtra's southwest coast. Situated at the end of said coast, Porbander is a picturesque seaport on the Arabian Sea and is home to pleasant beaches.
It is known as the White City because of its white stone construction. Among the places of interest in the city is Morvi.
Famous for its clocks, ceramics and tiles, the won's erstwhile leader constructed a temple with an adjoining secretariat now known as the Wag Palace or the Wellington Secretariat. Another important landmark of the town is the 765 feet long suspension bridge, which is only supported by the pillars on the river banks.
Passing over towers, the roadway is hung across the river on iron ropes. Prettily lying on the bank of Gondli river is Gondal, which is famous for its Naulackha Palace and the Riverside Palace of the former Maharaja. It has been made into a heritage hotel.
Porbandar tells lots of story which are related to history because this city was once the capital of the Jethwa Rajputs. Other than this, during 1785 AD Rana Sartanji established the present day capital. Porbandar is a town which is surrounded by high rampart walls, bastions and five gates, etc.
The excellent features of Porbandar lie in its stone buildings with ashlar masonary and rich carving. The facade of the houses on either side of the streets, with series of windows, carved gateways, using eclectic architectural language, invites tourists to experience the streetscape on foot.
