Haryana is located in northern India and is bordered by the Indian states of Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. On its eastern boundary is an enclave formed by the The National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Hindi for dwelling place of God, Haryana became India's 17th state in 1966, created by the separation of the Hindi-speaking areas of the state of Punjab from the Punjabi-speaking ones.
Chandigarh, is the joint capital of Haryana and Punjab though it has its own union territories. Since then Haryana has made impressive progress to become one of the most prosperous states of India. Its physical proximity to the national capital New Delhi, a well developed telecom and transport infrastructure, are its major strengths in the economic field. Being the birthplace of ancient Indian Vedic Civilization, the 5000 year old history of the city is imbued in glory.
It was here that Lord Krishna taught the people about Karma and Dharma through the Bhagwad Gita. It was also here that Ved Vyas wrote Mahabharat (in Sanskrit) on the banks of river Saraswati. The Arya Samaj, a Hindu religious sect founded in 1875 by Swami Dayananda Sarasvati, has a large number of followers among Haryana's people.
