Bilaspur is one of the districs in India's Himachal Pradesh. It has become famous with the manmade Govind Sagar Lake on the Sutlej River, which also serves as the reservoir for the Bhakra and Nangal Dam project.
The road bridge on this lake at Kandraur is highest of its kind in Asia, with headquarters in the town of Bilaspur.
The district is spread in an area of 1,167 square kilometer and a population of 340,735 as of 2001. Bilaspur was an erstwhile princely state of British India.
Its ruler assented to the Government of India on October 12 1948 and the district an Indian state under a chief commissioner. The state of Bilaspur was amalgamated with Himachal Pradesh on July 1, 1954, and became Bilaspur District.
The district is administratively divided into three namely Ghumarwin, Bilaspur Sadar, and Jhandutta. Jhandutta was carved out of Gumarwin in January 1998 while Naina Devi is a sub-tehsil of Bilaspur Sadar, and was created in January 1980.
Bilaspur is the first planned hill town of India and the perfect spot for the vacationers. It is located in a district which is surrounded by seven hills namely – Naina Devi, Jhanjiar, Kot, Bandala, Tiun, Bahadurpur and Rattanpur. Bilaspur is a fascinating hill station which has various types of attractions in and around Bilaspur including sightseeing, archaeological, religious, etc.
