Jammu district got its name from the city of Jammu, which besides being the winter capital of the state, is also recognized as the city of temples.
It was believed to be originally founded by Raja Jamboo Lochan during the 14th century B.C. Anantnag district spans at over an area of 3900 square kilometers.
with a population of roughly 8.50 lakhs and is situated 55 Kms.of the south-east of Srinagar, Anantnag district is called the Granary of the Kashmir Valley.
It is the third most highly populated district of the Valley after district Srinagar and Baramulla. About ¾ of the population lives in the rural areas and is mostly engaged in agriculture. The area is surrounded by a district named Srinagar found in the north, Pulwama, found in the north west districts and Kargil district in the north east. It is bordered by both Doda and Udhampur districts in the east and south east and by the district of Rajouri on the south west side.
