The unique district of Hassan was underneath the great sovereignty of Mouryas of North in the 3rd B.C. and later kingdoms of Kadambas to the Vijayanagar empire.
The area is so-called Hassan after the adored Goddess "Hasanamba", the smiling Goddess, and presiding divinity of the town.
Sited around the Southern Indian state of Karnataka at around 187 km from the renowned state capital of Bangalore, Hassan rolls from 13°01/’ North to 76°10/’ East.
Becoming closest railhead to Halebid, Belur, and Shravanbelagola, Hassan is an idyllic pedestal to explore these marvelously buit historical sites. The county of Hassan had been under the mighty control the Hoysalas clan from 11th to 13th century AD.
It was during these creative and inspirational times that the great temples of Belur and Halebid were constructed. Hassan was also greatly influenced and captivated by Jainism. Presently, it has become well-known centre and heart of Jain literature.
Hassan is a town surrounded by hills and scenic natural beauty. The beauty of Hassan can be compared to Ooty and that is why it is said poor man’s Ooty. There are lots of religious sites that include Belur, Halebid and Shravanabelgola Due to its close locations it is very easy to go one place to another.
Karnataka offers rich cultural heritage that can be experienced through its attractions. Belur is located on the banks of the river Yagachi. The temples in Belur are quite impressive and it has the beautiful temple of Channakeshava. In fact it is also known as Dakshina Varanasi or Southern Banaras.
