The land of letters, legends, latex and lakes, Kottayam has a variety of sights and stuffs that make it worthy of its title.
A single theory states that Kottayam literally means the interior of a fort - Kotta + Akam.
Formerly a part of the former Travancore state, rulers of Munjanad and Thekkumkur had their headquarters at Thazhathangadi in the present Kottayam town.
Remnants of the forts and palaces can still be found here. Among the Kerela's more mountainous districts, it is sandwiched between the Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields on the west. An important commercial centre in Kerala, most of India's natural rubber originates from the acres of well-kept plantations of Kottayam. One of the India's primary commodities board, the Rubber Board, is also seated here.
In 1989, the town was the first in India to have achieved 100% literacy. The highlands, scenic backwater stretches, extensive rubber plantations, legendary places and literate people truly make Kottayam a land of unique characteristics.
Kottayam offers all kinds of tourist attractions that can easily lure the tourists in huge numbers. The attractions include religious, historical and cultural sites. There are numbers of holy shrines of Hindus, Muslims and Christians.
The architectural style of the temple like the Thrirunakkara Mahadevar Shiva temple is awe-inspiring. However, there are more than 50 temples which have unique architectural style. The churches and mosques are also major tourist attractions that have become an integral part of the Kottayam tourism heritage.
