Situated on the southwestern tip of the Indian mainland, Kerela is bound by the Arabian Sea on the west, Karnataka on the north and northeast and Tamil Nadu on the east.
Forming an enclave on the north-western coast is the town of Mahe, which is part of Pondicherry's union territory.
Formed in 1956 from portions of the former Travancore-Cochin State and the former Madras State, including much of the Malabar Coast, Kerala is one of the smallest Indian states with an area of 38,864 square kilometers.
It is also one of the county's most populous states. Predominantly Hindu, the state has significant minorities of Muslims and Christians and is known for encouraging harmonious relations between the communities.
Languages spoken are Malayam, a Dravidian language derived from Tamil but incorporated with a considerable number of Sanskrit words. Home of the well-known dance-drama Kathakali, the ancient martial art Kalari Payattu also originated here.
