Bordered on the north-west by Rajasthan State, on the north by Uttar Pradesh State, on the east by Chhattisgarh State, on the south by Maharashtra State, and on the west by Gujarat State, Madhya Pradesh has remained a crucible of historical currents from all over.
Perhaps the oldest of the subcontinents, the state is believed to be one of the earliest dwellings of human beings. Several excavations have revealed a cultural sequence from the late Stone Age up to the early historical period.
The state is geographically situated in a transition area between the Indo-Gangetic Plain to the north and the Deccan Plateau to the south.
Its vast landscape is characterized by extensive plains separated by low hills, the most important uplands being the Vindhya Range and the Kaimur Hills in the west and north, and the Satpura, Mahadeo, and Maikala ranges in the south.
Madhya Pradesh had been divided a couple of times in the past when empires clashed to prove their supremacy over one another. During the Gupta's ascendancy, Madhya Pradesh formed part of the Harshvardhan Empire.
