This charming town of Aurangabad found on west-central Maharashtra state, western India, was founded in 1610. It has a long artistic and cultural history having been inhabited since the Stone Age.
Just in the hills to its North was where British officers in 1819 came to discover a horseshoe-shaped cliff meshed with what they thought were caves.
After some time of burrowing through its weathered interiors of debris and discarded objects, much to their surprise, they found themselves looking at elaborately carved and painted rooms cleaved from the solid rock.
The British soldiers didn’t realize it then, but they’d rediscovered Ajanta which was more than 2,000 years ago a religious enclave for Buddhist monks and scholars.
Aurangabad today is a bustling city with a diverse set of industries. Despite its thriving economical stature, to scholars and culture and art enthusiasts the city is more endeared as gateway to the ancient caves of Ajanta and Ellora, both famous as treasure trove of Indian Art and Sculpture.
Aurangabad is a historical city founded by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. River Kham is flowing by the side of the town. There is lots of Mughal architecture available in Aurangabad. The attractions include caves, tombs and monuments. The caves of Aurangabad are quite similar to Ajanta and Ellora and that is the reason it became the world heritage site.
