Meghalaya is a small state located in the North-eastern India. The name is Hindi and Sanskrit term for “The Abode of Clouds.”
It is home to some of the thickest surviving forests in India and therefore makes up one of the most important ecotourism circuits in the country today.
The state has two National Parks and three Wildlife Sanctuaries affording a lot of adventure activities such as mountaineering, rock climbing, trekking and hiking, water sports and many more.
Some of the trekking routes offered also serve as an opportunity for the tourists to encounter some rare animals such as the Slow Loris, assorted deer and bear. The state also has the Umiam Lake that has a water sports complex with facilities such as rowboats, paddleboats, sailing boats, cruise boats, water scooters and speedboats.
Meghalaya has around 500 natural limestone and sandstone caves spread over its entire area including five of the longest and deepest caves in the sub-continent. Some of these also have water channels flowing through them. Adventurous cavers from around the world have been lured to visiting the state, and they just keep coming back.
Nestled on the foothills of Himalayan, Meghalaya is located between Assam and Bangladesh. As the name suggests, Meghalaya is the abode of the clouds which offers the picturesque beauty of the state. This state of North-East India is the real abode of Nature. Cherapunjee is where the heaviest rainfall occurs and it is located in Meghalaya.

The tourist map of Meghalaya offers the attractions such as Shillong Peak, Sohpethneng Peak, and so on. Shillong Peak is located 10kms away from the city and it is the highest point from where you can experience the panoramic view of the countryside. Like wise, Sohpethneng Peak can be a nice treat for your eyes as this place is considered as ‘Navel of Haven’ as per Khasi mythology. Other than this, Ward’s Lake offers a picturesque view of flowerbeds and fairyland lighting around the lake.
The best alluring attractions that can treat your eyes is no other than waterfalls which include Spread Eagle Falls, Elephant Falls, Crinoline Falls, Noh Kalikai Falls, Dain Thlen Falls, Mawsmai Falls, Imilchang Dare, etc. Meghalaya has numerous caves which are the gifts of Nature. These caves become the major tourist attractions. However, to name some of them are Mawsmai Cave, Krem Mawmluh, The Cave of Eocene age, Krem Kotsati, Krem Umshangktat, Siju-Dobkhakol, Tetengkol-Balwakol, etc. For vacationers, Meghalaya can be a perfect holiday tourist spot. |
