One of India's oldest citites and also the business capital of Orissa, Cuttack derived its name from the Sanskrit word Kataka, which stand for a military camp or an army-protected for or government seat.
More than a thousand years old, Cuttack was the capital of Orissa for almost nine centuries.
The city perhaps, is also the grandest showroom of the state due to its world famous filigree works in silver, ivory and brass works, as well as textiles of woven silk and cotton.
A great engineering marvel can also be found here. Cuttack's river bank is protected by a stone revetment, exemplifying the ancient yet remarkable technological skill of Orissa.
Along the bank of the Maharandi River are the ruins of the fort Barbarati and the earthen mound of the nine-storey palace of the Ganga. Both are silent witnesses of the vicissitudes of the state's history.
Another place of interest for visitors is the Stadium adjacent to the fort. Built in 1954, the structure covers an area of 25 acres and has a sitting capacity of 30,000 persons.
Cuttack is the significant city of Orissa and it is situated on the delta formed by the Mahanadi and Kathjuri rivers. However, due to the city’s favourable climatic condition people come here in huge numbers round the year. There are lots of things to see in Cuttack which is the most ancient city of Orissa.
