Location Map of Orissa
One of the founding states of the Indian Union, the eastern state of Orissa is bordered on the north north by Jharkhand, on the north-east by West Bengal, on the east by the Bay of Bengal, on the south by Andhra Pradesh and on the west by Chhattisgarh.
Its coastal plain is narrow, flat and extremely fertile while the alluvial plain of the Deccan Plateau stretches into the southeast portion of the state. In 1956, a large earthe structure was built at Sambalpur to regulate the flow of the Mahandai River and produce hydroelectricity. |

Separated from the Bay of Bengal is the largest salt water lake in Asia, the Chilika Lake. It svolume varies seasonally and is an important wintering ground for thousands of migratory birds. The lake also harbors a variety of plant and fish species.
The state has also been active in the preservation of its wildlife. Found in the northeast is the North Simlipal National Park that bacme one of the country's nationwide Project Tiger reserves. |
