Being the coastal district of Orissa, Puri is famous for its historic antiquities, religious sanctuaries and architectural grandeur.
It shows off continuous history and is home to some of the world's famous temples, such as those of the Sun god Konraks and of the Lord Jagannath.
The Chilika Lake also lies here, which is one the largest salt waters in India and holds a scenic seascape, making it an ideal resort for migratory birds.
Puri's temples and sanctuaries, its beaches and vibrant festivals, especially the Car-Festival of Shri Lord Jagannath, echo not only to the whole of India but on a global scale. It is also the site of an annual festival honoring Vishnu and is attended by thousands of Hindus.
A trip down memory lane and to feel the glory of an ancient past equate to Puri. It is anyone's bridge to the past. Its culture and philosophy, quintessential and a fusion of anything diverse, have made it from Pan-Indian to Pan-Continental.
Puri is well known as holy place of pilgrimage for Hindus. Lord Jagannath is the reigning deity of the city and during Rath Yatra the images of Lord Jaganath, His sister Subhadra and brother Balbhadra are transported through the Grand Road (Bada Danda) of Puri in traditionally decorated massive chariots that are dragged by thousands of devotees to the Gundicha Ghar where they sojourn for a week. |
