Orissa's main cities are well-connected by vast network of railways. Consisting of a broad gauge and narrow gauge lines, most of the state's rail network is part of the East Coast Railway and a small portion of is included in the Southeastern railway.
A trip towards the southern districts of Orissa would have Berhampur as the most convenient entry by rail.
It is on the Kolkata-Chennai railway line. To visit the western areas, Rourkela and Sambalpur are the ideal entry points.
Other major railheads belonging to the East Coast Railway are Puri, Balasore, Khurda Road and Cuttack. Talcher, Dheknanal and Koraput are also linked to the key cities just like Rourkela and Sambalpur.
Although relatively few new rail routes have been constructed since Independence, India comes in sixth among the world's longest rail system. The system has undergone several modifications over the years and electrified lines have become especially important for urban commuter traffic. It was in 1989 that South Asia's first subway line started operating in Calcutta.
