This union territory has a combined area of around 491 square kilometers while the district of Pondicherry accounts for almost 60% of the total area. It is also the most populous in the territory.
Majority of the territory's population are Hindus, but there are important Muslim minorities in Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood with rice as the main food crop. Other cash crops include cotton, sugar cane and peanuts. A large number of medium-sized factories producing a variety of goods are also situated here.
