Festivals in Rajasthan

Rajsthan is a state of historic importance and is nostalgic in various aspects. The colour and flavour of history has made the state a wonderful place to be.

The barren desert state gets tinged with the glow of varied festivals with the change in season. The festivals there reflect the artistic and cultural richness of the state.

Camel Festival –
It is held in the month of January at Bikaner. The captivating city move towards to existence with merry music, olden vernacular gay and rhythms celebrations. There are special camel dances; camel races and the relaxed mood and elegance of the adorned vessels of the Rajasthan fascinate spectators.

Nagaur Fair –
It is held at Nagaur between January and February.
This is an annual festival. Located in the middle between Jodhpur and Bikaner, Nagaur gets up with the jingles of horses, cattle, and camels escorted by their gorgeously turbaned holders. There is intense negotiation between buyers and owners, and plethora of enjoyment and fiesta. Camel races, strains of ballads, Games, and tug-of-war contests create an enjoying atmosphere.

Desert Festival – This is most popular; the Desert Festival of Jaisalmer corresponds in February in front of the full moon at Jaisalmer. The desert resonates with a variety of dances of Rajasthanis: Gangaur, Ghoomer, Gair Dhap, Tehratal, Chari and Moria.

There are thrilling camel dances, races, camel acrobatics, as well as camel polo, contest tug-of-war, for the most adorned camel, between musclemen, a competition of turban tying and a Mr. Desert challenge. The finale is a light and sound show on a full moon night amongst sand hills.

Elephant Festival -

Elephant Festival is celebrated around Holi in March, in Jaipur, a tourists' favorite place.

The fiesta starts with a pageant of, camels, elephants and horses which pursued by their folk dancers with amusing best. They worshiped their God, Ganapati or Ganesh, on the event.

Gangaur –

This one is considered one of the Rajasthan's best significant local festivals, spring fiesta of Gangaur which is celebrated in amidst of March-April. It is a festival of married women and maidens, which starts from the day of Holi, and is continue for 18 days. The festival is observed with great splendor in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Nathdwara as well as Jaisalmer.

There are certain other festivals also e.g. Chandrabhaga Fair, Kapil Muni Fair, Summer Festival of Mount Abu, Jains fair - Sri Mahavirji Fair, Shitala Ashtami, Ramdeoji Fair etc. depicts that historical nostalgia and festivity makes the state unique.

There are many sports that were enjoyed by the erstwhile Maharajas of Rajasthan and the newer sports that are enjoyed by the present generation as well. 


The Pushkar Camel fair is held in November each year. Its one of the biggest fairs in which cattle, horses and camels are sold, decorated and raced.
