Tamil Nadu is a state located in South India, bordered by the Andhra Pradesh State on the North, by the Karnataka State on the Nowth-west, by the Kerala State on the West and on the East and South by the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean, separated from Sri Lanka by the Palk Strait.
The state was known as Madras State until 1968. Tamil Nadu was created out of the former Madras Presidency under the States Reorganization Act of 1956. It can be divided into two natural divisions: the coastal plains and the hilly North and West.
The state lies in the South-east of the Indian peninsula. It covers an area of 130,058 square kilometers (50,216 square miles) and has a population of 62,110,839 (2001).
