Tamil Nadu is a state in the Southern India. Its capital is the cosmopolitan city of Chennai, formerly called Madras. The city itself has a population of around 5 million people. It is one of the cities in India with a developed railway system.
In 1997, the first segment of the Mass Rapid System (MRTS) from Beach to Thirumayilai was opened. It has a surface line stretching 9 kilometers long with 8 stations and runs mostly along the Buckingham Canal. Six Kilometers of this line are elevated.
Chennai has a well-patronized sub-urban rail network with services on 3 lines: Beach to Tambaram, which is 30 kilometers long with 18 stations; Chennai Central to Pattabiram, 25 kilometers long with 15 stations; and Chennai Central to Gummidipundi, 48 kilometers long with 16 stations.
In April 2005, another 3-line rail network with a total length of 71 kilometers long was presented. Line 1 runs from Beach to Koyambedu, Line 2 starts at Tiruvotriyur, and passes through Central station, the main business district at Mount Road and goes all the way to the Chennai International Airport, and Line 3 connects Tiruvanmiyur to Ambattur.
