Majority of Tamil Nadu's population's main source of income is agriculture. The land's important crops include sugar cane, peanuts, oilseeds, cotton, bananas, potatoes, tea and spices.
Notwithstanding, Tamil Nadu is also one of India's most industrialized states. The state's industrial production is focused around Chennai.
The city is an important manufacturing center producing massive outputs of cotton, sugar, leather (more than 40 per cent of India's exports), textiles, engineering, petrochemicals, and the manufacture of vehicles, railway rolling stock, and precision tools.
Due to its active industries, Tamil Nadu also considered the state of its transportation means. Concrete roads, railways and others have been focused on. This has helped the condition of the state's trade with other states in India as well as with other countries.
Even though Tamil Nadu's power-generating capacity has developed, it still suffers from a shortage of electricity. Because of this, a nuclear power plant at Kalpakkam was established and began generating electricity in 1986.
A second nuclear power plant was under erection at Kudangulam in the early 21st century and is scheduled to begin its production in 2007. There are also hydroelectric power stations operating along the River Cauvery.
