Wildlife in Assam

The wild spots of Assam are visited by the tourists from all over the world. The national parks and wildlife sanctuaries of Assam are discussed below.

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park, situated in the main heart of the state, is well-known for its one-horned rhinoceros.  It covers an area of 430sq. km.

The mighty river Brahmaputra flows near Kaziranga. The beautiful natural scenarios, the grassland, the various species of animals, the waterlands make Kaziranga a famous tourist spot. It is in Golaghat district.

Kaziranga is situated at a distance of 239 km from the Guwahati Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport. The distance to Jorhat Airport is 97 km.

Assam State Transport service, private buses; taxies of the tourist agencies provide transport service from Guwahati to Kaziranga. Wildlife resorts are also found near Kaziranga.

Nameri National Park

Nameri National Park is situated on the hills of Eastern Himalayas. Jia Bhoroli River flows near Nameri Park.  It is 131 kms away from Guwahati Airport. The nearest town to Nameri Park is Tezpur, which has also many ancient temples.

Manas National Park

Manas is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas. It is on the bank of the river Manas. A tiger reserve sanctuaries of India, Manas, covers an area of 519.77 sq. kms. It is in Barpetta district of Assam. Manas is 176 kms away from Guwahati, the main city of Assam.

Dibru-Saikhowa National park

It is situated in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. It covers an era of 340 sq km.
The Park is famous for its wetlands, grasslands, animals and dense forest mainly grassland and dense forest. Its main attractions are semi-wild horse and white winged wood- duck.  Leopards, Sambar, buffalo, wild dog, river dolphin are also found in the Park.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Pobitora wild life Sanctuary is situated in Morigan district of Assam. It is famous for its one horned rhinoceros, various domestic and migratory birds and various species of fish. It is surrounded by beautiful hills, wetlands, grasslands and dense forests. It is 50 km away from Guwahati, the main city of the state.

Deeporbeel Bird Sanctuary

Deeporbeel Bird Sanctuary is a home to the various winter migratory birds. The birds from the winter countries of the world migrate here due to its favorable climate and foods. Rani-Garbhanga Reserve is situated on the edge of the sanctuary. It is situated near the Guwahati Airport.
