Cities in Meghalaya

Meghalaya is divided into major sub divisions of Khasi Hills, Gora Hills and Jaintia Hills. It is situated in the north eastern corner of India.

One third part of Meghalaya is covered by green lustrous forests. The forests are best known for biodiversity of animals, birds and fauna.

The state is very small yet there are some important cities which hold tourist attractions.

Shillong:-The beautiful capital of Meghalaya is situated between the Brahamaputra and Surma Valley. It is situated at an altitude of 1496m from the sea level. It has a historical importance also. The City was the capital of undivided Assam.

The climate here is very good. Beautiful lakes and waterfalls combined with the climate makes Shillong a perfect holiday destination. The City is surrounded by pine forests and green mountains. It is also known as Scotland of the East because of the scenic beauty and excellent climate.

Tura: - The next important city of is Tura. It is the administrative capital of Meghalaya. Tura valley is situated right below the Tura peak. The climate is more or less same through out the year so is good tourist place.

It has some beautiful places to visit. An exotic view of Brahmaputra valley and the Golden yellow plains of Bangladesh draw attentions from tourists. Small motel and lodges are good for the accommodation.

Cherrapunji: - It is regarded as most popular tourist place of North-East. We all know about the rainfall of Cherrapunji. The original name of the city is ‘Sohra’. You can enjoy the drizzling rain through out the year. The Khasi monoliths and Mawsmai falls are the major attraction of this town. It is 50kilometers away from Shillong and is well connected by road.

Nongstoin: - Nongstoin is the Headquarter of West Khasi Hills. The town is famous for the peculiar type of embroidered stone. It is 93 kilometers far from Shillong. The main attraction of the place is Nongkhnum Island which is the second largest island of Asia. Comfortable accommodations are available here. You can approach the town from Shillong by road.

Nangpoh: - Nangpoh is the Headquarter of Ri-Bhoi district situated on the lower part of East Khasi Hills. It is the best place to halt before going to Shillong.

The peace of the city confiscates tiredness and charges you with energy. The Orchid lake Resort of Nangpoh is very famous for water sports. The road side market of the town is also very appealing.
