Wildlife of Meghalaya

Meghalaya is known for diversity of dense and cultivated flora. The gorgeous beauty of the nature is abundant every where in the state.

The fauna and flora varies from tropical and sub-tropical to temperate or near temperate. The extensive rainfall in this state has blessed Meghalaya with rich bio diversity. Meghalaya is famous for densely forested Hills.

Balpakram National Park and Nokrek National parks should be included in your must to visit list. Here you can see the various species of plants and animals.

Balpakram National Park:- The Balpakram National park is at the height of 3000ft from the sea level. In 1987 it has been declared as National Park.

The total area of the Park is 200sqare kilometer. The best time to visit is in between mid Aril- mid June. The place is paradise to those who love wild life, sports and adventure.

This place is 167kilometers far from Tura town and is well connected by road. Helicopter services are also available from Shillong and Tura. You can see different type of plants, animals and birds in their natural habitat. Different species of Tigers, leopards, Asian Elephants, Deers are the main attraction of the Balpakram national park. The place is also known for coal and limestone mines.

Nokrek National Park: - It is just two kilometers away from the Tura peak and is located in the Garo Hills District. The park is at the distance of fifteen kilometers from Williamnagar.

It is one of the biggest biospheres of India. This national park is home to various species of reptiles and invertebrates. The Nokrek national park is also famous for the natural limestone caves. Smoky Leopard, Tiger, Wild Buffaloes and different species of Wild cat dominates the Park. Hornbill, Peacock, Pheasant, Hillock and many other bird varieties can be spotted during your visit.

In you visit the National park during March and April you can also see the beautiful and rare Green Pigeons. The flora is moist deciduous and tropical evergreen. Besides these two National Parks there are two more biospheres in the state. The safari rides of these national parks are enjoyable experience.
