The name Sundarbans has been derived from the “Sundari” trees that are grown in abundance in West Bengal. Some of the species of plants and animals found here are fishing cats, mongooses Axis deer, jungle cats, wild boar, Rhesus monkeys and many more. Sunderbans reserve serves as the breeding ground for a large variety of birds such as Heron, Sea Eagle, Egret, Seagull, Eastern Knot, Kingfisher, Cormorant and Tern. It also provides shelter to the migratory birds. To name a few, we have Golden Plover, Little Stint, Curlew, Pintail etc.
West Bengal gives its visitors a golden opportunity to view the aquatic life. Even the varied forms of reptiles can be seen here. Sunderbans is visited by people to catch the glimpse of the Bengal tiger.
The sanctuary also houses other endangered species such as river terrapin, Ganges River Dolphin and last but not least the estuarine crocodile. West Bengal has a total of five national parks namely Sunderbans, Gorumara National Park, Singalila National Park, Neora Valley National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve. |
Singalila National Park is located at a higher altitude. It serves as home for various forms of wildlife such as barking deer, minivet serow, chinkara, Kalij pheasants, pangolin etc. West Bengal boasts of its rich bird life.
Birds migrate to this wonderful place during the winter season to seek shelter. The Northern parts of West Bengal have thick forests known as Dooars that are spread over an area of 130 km. it is a land of virgin forests that is crisscrossed by the Teesta River and her plenty of tributaries flowing in varied directions.

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is yet another wildlife sanctuary that is located in the Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal. It lies at a stretch of near about 125 kms from Siliguri.
The prime purpose for establishing this reserve was the protection of wildlife especially one-horned rhinos. It was created way back in the year 1941. To conclude, it is fun exploring the wildlife of West Bengal and seeing them living in their natural habitat. In fact, a visit to the state of West Bengal is incomplete without having glanced at its wildlife. |
