There is definitely more to Agra than the famed Taj Mahal. This ancient city on the bank of Yamuna River achieved prominence when it became capital of the Mughal sovereigns from 1526 to 1658.
After it was captured by the Britisj in 1803, it was designated as provincial capital and administrative center.
Agra is also home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites; the Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj Mahal of course.
The present city was founded by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1566 and during his reign, the Agra became a great center of culture and scholarship.
Well-connected by rail and road, the main factor that makes Agra a major tourist destination has to be its collection of many splendid Mughal-era and Indo-Saracenic structures.
Tourism is undoubtedly the city's major industry. Other outstanding sites in the city are Janangir Mahal, a palace of White Marble and the Pearl Mosque or the Moti Masjid.
