Among the newly carved districts in the state of Uttaranchal is another popular hill station, Almora. The capital of Kumaon, this three-mile long horse-saddle shaped ridge is surrounded on all four sides by hill ranges.
Those four ranges have the temples of the goddesses Banari Devi, Kasar Devi, Savahi Devi and the Sun god on their peaks.
Almora is probably one the best places to enjoy a spectacular view of the snow-capped King of the Mountains, the Himalayas. Over the years, the district has attracted many dignitaries and personalities.
The famous lecture book From Almora to Colombo by Swami Vivekananda teel of the spellbinding beauty of the mountains as well as the serenity of the Kanyakumari Ocean. Internationally acclaimed dance choreographer Udaya Shankar fell in love, inspiring him to put-up a cultural center.
Almora also served as Jawaharlal Nehru's place of exile when he was jailed during the British regime. Letters to his daughter expressed the solitude and the varied moods of nature the place exudes.
About two kilometers from the center of the town is a picnic spot called Bright End Corner that offers a superb view of the sun rise and sun set and a little away from it is the Vivekananda memorial. Another picnic spot surrounded by gardens ten kilometers away from the town is Martola. Moreover, a display of idols and statues can be viewed the Govind Vallabh Pant Museum.
