This northern Indian state joined the union in 1947 under the name United Provinces and was later changed to Uttar Pradesh in 1950. Dominated by the Gangetic Plain, the state is bordered by Nepal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh states, Bihar and Jharkand states on the north, west, south and east respectively.
Its capital Lucknow is known for its chief architectural features are the fort and a mausoleum. The capital is also known for the Jama Masjid or Great Mosque.
Built in typical Mughal style, the construction was started in 1840 by Mohammad Ali Shah and was completed by his wife Begum Malika Jahan after his death.

The state is also home to many colleges and universities including the University of Allahabad and the most renowned institution in Asia for the study of Western culture, the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College.
