This state is situated in Northern India, bounded on the North by Nepal and by the state of Uttaranchal, by the Haryana State and the National Capital Territory of Delhi on the North-west, by Rajasthan State on the West, by Madhya Pradesh and the Chhattisgarh states on the South, and by Bihar and Jharkhand States on the East.
The state joined the Indian Union at independence in 1947 as United Provinces and in 1950; its name was finally changed to Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh has an area of 231,256 square kilometers (89,288 square miles). The state's capital is Lucknow..

| Uttar Pradesh is now composed of the Vindhya, the Southern Hills Plateau, and dominated by the Gangetic plain. Formerly part of the state was the hilly region to its North.
The Ghaghara River which is one of the largest tributaries of the Ganges, runs across the North-east corner of Uttar Pradesh and is one of the state's main commercial waterways. |
