Mathura is a lovely city located in Northern India, specifically in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Formerly known as Muttra, this city is the capital of the Mathura District. The city's name, also sometimes called Brajbhoomi, was formerly changed in 1948.
It is situated on the Yamuna River near Agra and has a population of 226,850 in 1991. The area has long been a center for Hinduism and is said to be the birthplace of the god Krishna, an important deity in the Hindu religious pantheon. Mathura is an important pilgrim place of the Hindus and one of the seven sacred cities in India.

| The main pilgrim center in the city is the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple. It was at the center of Buddhist sculptural activity from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century Ad.
The Mathura Buddha, a Buddha figure carved out of sandstone, came from this city. The Buddha here is shown seated on a lion throne with a large halo behind his head and his attendants at his sides. |
