One of the last remaining major refuges of the in danger of extinction Bengal tiger, the Sundarbans National Park in the Ganges is home to the Bengal tiger, as well as some wild boars, the chital, snakes and monkeys.
Designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1987, the park is supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature.
Up north, near the Nepal border, is the town of Darjiling, a popular tourism center. Located here is a scenic botanical garden, several Buddhist Monasteries and the Darjiling Himalayan Railway, a fine example of a well passenger railway. It was opened in 1881 and was considered on the World Heritage list in 1999.
